International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and illegal drugs trade.

This year’s theme ‘Health for Justice. Justice for Health’ emphasises that justice and health are “two sides of the same coin” when it comes to addressing the problems associated with drugs. According to the United Nations, in order to create effective responses to tackle the problem of drugs, accountable institutions of criminal justice, health and social services should work together to provide integrated solutions.

Over the last couple of decades, drug consumption has become one of the gravest problems affecting the children and youth of the country. In February 2019, the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi submitted its report “Magnitude of Substance Use in India” that was sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The total cases estimated by the report, more than half of them are contributed by states like Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh that have a high prevalence of drug abuse and disorders. Punjab ranks consistently at the top or in the top five in many of the surveys conducted to measure drug abuse and illicit trafficking.Due to Punjab’s proximity to the border, the state serves as a transit route for smugglers for the distribution of drugs in the state and the rest of the country. Youth who are unemployed often resort to narcotics in the hope of forgetting their troubles. Sometimes, the youth try drugs for fun under the influence of their peers, which often results in addiction. The Punjabi music industry only exacerbates the problem, as glorification of drugs has become a trend. The problem was so severe that it prompted the Punjab government to set up a "culture commission" last year to tackle the “menace of vulgarity” and its complete eradication by monitoring songs.

According to an old report by United Nationsbacked International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), India is one of the major hubs for illicit trading of drugs. The drugs range from cannabis to more recent prescription drugs like tramadol.
According to an official of the Red Cross Drug Deaddiction and Rehabilitation Centre, Gurdaspur, “The geographical location of the district makes it prone to trafficking of many types of drugs. This affects not only the dealers but also the people, as the drugs are easily available and are cheaper.”

I am impressed by the topic you chose to address. Drugs are an addiction but many come under peer pressure or due to stress they latch on to it. Once it starts it is impossible to shrug it off. It is very sad that the youth of the country are getting into drugs.

Your posts are always so informative. In the 80s, the drug abuse situation was very bad in India. Now there is more awareness but it is bad in Punjab still.

Drug abuse is more prevalent across classes because of its ability to provide a quick fix. With the pandemic, many are resorting to drugs to cope. As long as there are huge amounts of money involved and the traffickers enjoy political backing, it would be extremely difficult to put an end to it.

The peer pressure and the urge to try something new is making the youth to travel this path, hope the government comes up with strict guidelines to save lakhs of people to falling for drug addiction. Your post is well researched and brings awareness among readers, good job.
The gradual increase in cases of Drug abuse is alarming. It was quite evident during last year's lockdown. It really makes me agitated sometimes when Government doesn't speak anything on the subject.
Drug Abuse is one of the worst crimes as not just the consumer but entire families suffer due to effects of it. It is on the rise again amongst youngsters because of the pocket money they receive without any checks by parents.
This is an eye opener for many who stills re unaware about this social issue. Thank you for choosing to write and being about awareness

the most affected of all is our youth. the kind of money and people with power are involved that makes it highly difficult to put an end to this mess.

these are such challenging times, I think the more we progress, it seems like we take a few steps back at the same time. There can be many policies, regulations , police protection in place but if there's a demand for such illicit things, supply is ahead if not close behind. Mindset has to change first

An informative post and very apt. As an educator, I have been in the fore-front of the drive to keep the young adults connected with their present and aware of the menace lurking in their the homes and their social media platforms - not a backyard problem anymore; it has rung the front doorbells of many a home and left bright and promising careers in the dump. My son ahs been actively associated in his internship with a huge de-addiction organisation fighting to help youth get out of this vicious circle abroad and the stories are all similar and the pattern discernable too. Kudos to you for this informative and timely post. I hope we can make this post reach many - far and wide.
